Theatre Royal's final curtain
Work to demolish Chatham's Theatre Royal began on Saturday 18th April 2009 following a surveyor's report
that the structure was unsafe and liable to catastrophic collapse. The Theatre was opened in 1899, closed in 1953 and suffered a fire
in the 1960's. Despite valiant efforts by the Theatre Royal Trust to secure grant funding from the National Lottery and elsewhere
it was clear by 2002 that funding opportunities looked bleak and the property was sold. Cllr Mackinlay was interviewed on BBC TV's
South East outlining his thoughts on the demolition. It is a sad day for all those who had worked so hard, but local residents are
universally pleased that the eyesore of the derelict building is finally being removed. The only questions now being asked are ......
what will come in its place?
